OpenVZ or KVM: choosing a VPS type

Both types give your server its own share of processor cores, memory and storage, full root access, and an operating system you manage yourself. They differ in how the virtualization is done, which matters mostly for unusual software.

OpenVZ

An OpenVZ VPS is a container. It runs on the host server's Linux kernel rather than booting a kernel of its own, which keeps overhead low and leaves more of the plan for your applications. The limits come from the same design: the operating system has to be Linux, and you cannot change the kernel or load kernel modules of your own.

KVM

A KVM VPS is a full virtual machine with its own kernel, so it behaves like a standalone server. Choose KVM when your software needs a particular kernel version, its own kernel modules, or low-level control that a container does not give you.

For a typical website, online store or application stack, either type does the job, and the decision usually comes down to the cores, memory and data transfer in the plans above. The OpenVZ vs KVM comparison goes into the trade-offs in more depth, and if you are not yet sure a VPS is the right step, signs your website has outgrown shared hosting covers how to tell.

VPS data center locations

The locations on offer depend on the type of VPS. KVM servers are offered in Chicago (United States), Coventry (United Kingdom) and Sydney (Australia). OpenVZ servers are offered in Pori (Finland) and Sofia (Bulgaria). You pick the data center on the order form, and the one closest to most of your visitors is usually the right choice.
